The NFGC Dairy Analysis

There is someone I currently doff my hat for and its none other person than #AishaYesufu

Wowwww
That lady is brilliant
Extremely brilliant

I have been going to her Twitter handle everyday since the 1.5m worth to 1billion #magical_farm surface

I am not sure she is a farmer
Or an agriculturist as some will termed it

But she has successfully been able to bring out quality and intelligent question from the interviews that has been flying around

I finally come to the conclusion that the farm is not meant to run sustainably on its own but to keep feeding from external fund and source.

I read some figures of production and harvesting which are just imagination of the author

Gudali cow milk yield is 4 – 5 litre per day written on internet

The Nigeria cow in realife gives 1 – 3 litre of milk per day

Friesland Campina work with Fulani herdsmen in Oyo State

We even have a milk collection centre in Saki

A litre of milk is sold for N90

You plan to buy the cow for N200,000
A cow will lactate or produce milk for 9 months

The quantity of milk keep reducing from day 1

But then let’s calculate with
300 days × 5 litres

1,500 litre × N90

= N 135,000 per cow

You bought the cow for N200,000
You realise N135,000 from milk

No feeding
No Housing
No health issue
No labour
Nothing

How profitable is that
But then

Grants, loan, assistance will be coming in to substitute the expenses

………………………………………………………….

How to grow dairy milk network to be sustainable

* Buy few no of cows
The cows need be examined for some features to know if they will be good for artificial insemination eg the back structure, the width of the pelvis etc

* Buy semen for artificial insemination for the cows
The first year they will produce calf of 25% hybrid + 75% local breed

The first year calf + Artificial insemination becomes 50 /50

Third year 75% hybrid + 25% local

Fourth year 100%

Females are not guarantee all year
The male are sold out
……………………………………

With the change come increased milk yield per cow
From 5 litre per day to 8 litre to 10 litre and it keep increasing till 20 litre and more

That’s how people in other countries build their dairy stock while still making profit from the farm

……………………………….

The other option is buying the hybrid cattle straight off

This could be extra expensive and will take several years before one can recover from it

* The housing is a special kind that require keeping it cool all the time

* Special feeding method are required

* The system produce high milk yield starting from 20 – 60litre

Most farm that do this system don’t actually combine it with some other thing because of the delicacy involved

…………………………………………….

The question again is where and how do you sell the milk produced from your cow?

Who and where is your target market?

You can’t invest so much into dairy only to come and start looking for who will buy the milk

Or is it that we will cross that bridge when we get there?

Please stop playing figures

Practical farm practise is not figure like
